Students and staff will join us to perform The Polovstian Dances from Prince Igor by Borodin, and the Messe de Requiem By Saint-Saens, directed by Simon Williamson, Director of Arts at Wellington College.

Welcome to the first concert of our 2016/17 season – a feast of joyful music performed in the magnificent Chapel of Wellington College in Crowthorne. John Rutter’s Gloria and Handel’s The King Shall Rejoice will be accompanied by organ, brass and percussion, and as the concert is during Advent weekend, there will also be some items to get us in the mood for Christmas.

Wellington College Chapel is situated within the estate of Wellington College Crowthorne. There is ample parking in front of the College and provision is made for wheelchair users.

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi composed this Gloria in Venice, probably in 1715, for the choir of the Ospedale della Pietà, an orphanage for girls (or more probably a home, generously endowed by the girls’ “anonymous” fathers, for the illegitimate daughters of Venetian noblemen and their mistresses). The wonderfully sunny nature of the Gloria, with its distinctive melodies and rhythms, is characteristic of all of Vivaldi’s music, giving it an immediate and universal appeal.

The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace By Karl Jenkins

Commissioned by Guy Wilson, Master of the Royal Armouries, Britain’s oldest national museum, The Armed Man was concieved, initially, as a Millennium project but was dedicated by the composer to the victims of Kosovo.

A marching army merges into reflections on Islamic and Christian calls to prayer, but a menacing Sanctus leads to war and mass destruction. The point that one death is one too many is made by the Agnus Dei but it is left to the Benedictus to heal the wounds of the survivors. The Mass ends with the the affirmation from Revelations that change is possible, that pain and death can be overcome.

Jenkins has created moving and exciting music around excerpts from such sources as the Bible, poetry, songs and chants. These range from L’Homme Arme (“The armed man must be feared…”, anon. 1450 – 63) through the Islamic call to prayer, parts of the Christian Mass, poems by Dryden, Kipling, Malory, Swift, Sankichi and Wilson and from the Mahabharata.

Our first foray abroad!

We sang a programme of Russian and English music in St Salvator Cathedral and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (The Church of Our Lady), which was enthusiastically received by large audiences. There was plenty of time for sightseeing and socialising too – boat trips on the canals, visiting the brewery, climbing the bell tower, sampling the delights of the chocolate shops, and a meal all together in the De Vier Winden restaurant.

African Sanctus - 2004

During a visit to Cairo in 1969, on the citadel hill overlooking the Nile, Fanshawe conceived the idea of a western choir accompanying Islamic Muezzins as a work in “Praise to One God”.

With tape-recorder, rucksack and camera, hitching lifts (often by camel) he first travelled from Cairo to Khartoum and then west to the Marra mountains.

On the mountaintop, under a full moon, he recorded four men sitting on a prayer mat, in a deep trance, chanting, swaying from side to side, unconscious of his presence. This experience gave him the inspiration for the final form of the work – that “praise to one God” should contain a wide variety of East African sounds. He re-traced his tracks back towards the Red Sea and embarked on a long expedition, in the shape of a symbolic Cross, through Sudan, Uganda and Kenya and towards “the source of the Nile’s music” – Lake Victoria – recording as he went. In 1973, with his new wife, he continued the search for folk music around Lake Victoria and, following the first performance, returned again with a BBC film crew to revisit the places and people he met on the original journey.
